Questions people ask

Frequently asked questions about S&P 500

What you can do with this price, and when.

Can I see the S&P 500 price this weekend?

Yes — the price at the top of this page keeps updating all week. It comes from xyz:SP500 on Hyperliquid, a contract that follows S&P 500 around the clock. Official benchmark prices are published separately, on their own schedule.

Where can I trade S&P 500 right now?

xyz:SP500 on Hyperliquid — open right now. Opening an account and funding it is the only step between you and an order. Open a Hyperliquid account →

Is the S&P 500 the same thing as SPY?

They follow the same index. The S&P 500 itself cannot be bought directly; SPY is an ETF that tracks it and trades only in market hours. The contract on this page tracks the same index and trades all week.

What do I need before I can place a S&P 500 order?

An account on the exchange above, and a USDC balance — a stablecoin worth about one dollar. Hyperliquid trades from a crypto wallet you control, so there is no application to wait on.

How much do I need, and do I have to use leverage on S&P 500?

No. Size a position at 1x and it moves dollar for dollar with S&P 500. Higher leverage multiplies the move in both directions and can have the position closed automatically if the price runs against you; the exchange shows that liquidation price before you confirm the order, and the minimum size is small enough to test with.

Why does the S&P 500 price move on Saturday and Sunday?

Because these exchanges never close. News lands at all hours and the weekend market prices it in straight away, while the index waits until it reopens.

Why does this differ from the S&P 500 price I see elsewhere?

Different products, different markets. These contracts have their own buyers and sellers, so the price can sit slightly either side of the reference. Check which product and which timestamp you are comparing.

What exactly am I trading here?

A perpetual future that follows S&P 500. It gives you the price exposure without shares in the S&P 500 companies, and you can size the position with or without leverage. Read the risk disclosure →

About the S&P 500

The S&P 500 is the most-watched U.S. equity index: 500 of the largest listed American companies, weighted by market value, and the benchmark for trillions of dollars in index funds. The official index is calculated only during regular U.S. trading hours.

The price here is a 24/7 index-linked contract that keeps updating when the official value freezes — overnight, weekends, and holidays. It tracks the index but is not the official published level.
